The name of the anticoagulant being administered must be indicated on the test request. Please see each individual page:

Collection Instructions

Citrate tubes must be completely filled in order to perform testing. The level of blood must be within the top and bottom borders of the black marker on the tubes.


For Clexane and Danaparoid monitoring:

  • Collect 2 x 4 mL Sodium Citrate (Light Blue Top) tubes (4 - 6 hours post anticoagulant administration).

For Rivaroxaban and Apixaban monitoring:

  • Collect 2 x 4 mL Sodium Citrate (Light Blue Top) tubes (2 - 3 hours post anticoagulant administration)

For Heparin monitoring:

  • Collect 2 x 4 mL Sodium Citrate (Light Blue Top) tubes. The specimen must be marked Urgent to avoid Heparin neutralisation.
