Prior to ordering the test, authorisation from the Consultant Laboratory Haematologist is required. Please telephone 03 9496 3100.

Collection Instructions

Citrate tubes must be completely filled in order to perform testing. The level of blood must be within the top and bottom borders of the black marker on the tubes.


  • Collect 2 x 4 mL Sodium Citrate (Light Blue Top) tubes (4 - 6 hours post anticoagulant administration).

CSR Instructions

Instructions for: Heidelberg Specimen Reception

  • Please forward frozen aliquots to the Coagulation Department. Hand directly to a staff member.
Laboratory Instructions

After centrifugation, coagulation specimens remain viable for up to 8 hours at room temperature (RT).

Procesing instructions for: Regional Laboratories

  • Please ensure routine coagulation testing is validated prior to double centrifuging for Complex Haemostasis testing.
  • Create a Platelet Poor Plasma aliquot by double centrifuging, aliquoting, and freezing (in line with LWI-HAUT-007).
  • Refer to LWI-HAUT-021 for the number of aliquots required for this test.

Storage instructions for: Regional Laboratories

  • Store Platelet Poor Plasma aliquots frozen at -20°C.
  • Store Primary Sodium Citrate refrigerated at 4°C.

Transport instructions for: Regional Laboratories

  • Transport Platelet Poor Plasma aliquots frozen in biofreeze bottles.
