Fluid MCS covers the following sample types: 

  • Synovial (Joint Aspirate) Fluid
  • Ascitic/ Peritoneal Fluid
  • Pleural Fluid
  • Pericardial Fluid
  • Peritonal Dialysis Fluid
  • Fine Needle Aspirate Fluid
Collection Instructions

If collecting in syringe, discard the needle and cap the syringe. Send syringe to laboratory.

For aspirates collect 2 - 10 mL and place most of the aspirate into a sterile container (70ml yellow top). 

If anaerobic testing is required, please send the syringe (remove the needle and cap with a safety cap) to the laboratory. 

If Cytology and/or Biochemistry required please separate if possible, into 2 or 3 serile containers (70ml yellow top) .
