Collection Instructions

LABORATORY BASED COLLECTION ONLY.

This test requires 2 x 9mL PLAIN (red top) tubes - please ensure tubes are filled completely

This test must be collected using a HOT BOX kit, maintained at 37°C (kit stocked with pre-warmed syringes, collection tubes, etc.). Collection materials should only be taken out immediately prior to use. 

After blood collection, the specimen tubes should be immediately returned to the HOT BOX and transported promptly to the laboratory. 

Contact your laboratory or hospital associated collection centre for a HOT BOX.

CSR Instructions

Instructions for: Metropolitan & Regional Specimen Receptions

  • Store whole blood before testing at 37°C.
  • If centrifuged & separated, aliquots should be stored at 4°C. 

Instructions for: Regional Specimen Receptions

  • Send the primary tube (cells) and separated serum at 4°C to the Heidelberg Laboratory for testing.
Laboratory Instructions

Instructions for: Regional Laboratories

  • The primary sample (PLAIN (red top)) must be maintained at 37°C until clot has completed formed and retracted within tube.
  • Separate serum from clot with a pipette in a secondary aliquot tube.
  • Centrifuge the secondary aliquot tube to remove trace red cells and then transfer the serum to a tertiary aliquot tube which is to be labelled, dated and signed and stored at 4°C until testing is performed.

Instructions for: Heidelberg Specimen Reception

  • For samples collected at Austin: remove samples from the HOT BOX and immediately place into a 37°C incubator. Blood Bank staff will collect the samples from the incubator and process specimens. Samples are to remain in their original collection tubes. 
  • For samples arriving from Regional laboratories: Forward samples to blood bank.
