Ordering Information

Clinicians must also request 'Ionised Calcium' and 'Parathyroid Hormone' concurrently with PTHrP for interpretation of results by laboratory.

NB: NATA/RCPA accreditation does not cover the performance of this service. 

Collection Instructions

EDTA tubes with Trasylol Additive (Aprotinin) can be obtained by calling the central laboratory, (03) 9496 3100. These tubes are not evacuated and will not draw blood into them, therefore collection with a syringe is required.

Collection of SST and PPT's are required for testing of Ionised Calcium and PTH. If these tests are requested, then the SST and PPT do not need to be collected twice. 

  • Ensure a request for PTHrP contains ALL of the following tubes:
    • 1 x 4mL EDTA Tube with Aprotinin - Must be completely filled. - Collect and send to laboratory on ice.
    • 1 x DEDICATED Serum Separation Tube (SST) - Must be completely filled.
    • 1 x Plasma Preparation Tube (PPT) - Must contain at least 4mL of blood.

Centrifuge, aliquot, and freeze AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Instructions for: Metropolitan & Regional Specimen Receptions

  • Ensure testing for Ionised Calcium and PTH is possible with tubes collected. 
  • Process EDTA Tube with Aprotinin as follows:
    • Centrifuge tube refrigerated at 4°C.
    • Separate plasma into 2 aliquots, each containing more than 500 µL (0.5mL).
    • Freeze aliquots at -20°C within 2 hours of collection.
  • Regional Laboratories should forward samples to Heidelberg Laboratory frozen in BioFreeze bottle.

Instructions for: Heidelberg Sendaways Department

  • Sample may still be sent if only one aliquot is available.
  • Ensure results for Ionised Calcium and PTH are sent with sample to testing laboratory.
