Instructions for: Metropolitan & Regional Specimen Receptions

'Normal' Controls and a Blood Film must be sent with the sample:

  • 1 unstained/stained blood film prepared from the patient's EDTA whole blood specimen.
  • Control Requirements:
    • For Adults: 6 x 500uL aliquots of EDTA whole blood, taken from 6 different patients, all with normal red cell parameters/indices parameters.
    • For Neonates under 4 weeks: 3 x 150uL aliquots of neonatal EDTA whole blood, taken 3 patients with normal red cell parameters/indices for age.
    • Controls should be collected from samples ± 24 hours of collection from the patient's sample.
    • Label control vials as '1', '2' ... '6'. Do not affix laboratory number to control vials.
