This test is not routinely offered. This test is primarily offered for patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Collection Instructions

Instructions for: Austin Health Clinical Teams (Clinicians & Nurses)

  • Collect specimen without using tourniquet.
  • Do not evacuate blood directly into a vacutainer as aspiration and mixing within the tube may cause unnecessary haemolysis.
  • Blood should be collected slowly with a needle and syringe.
  • The vacutainer should be uncapped and the blood is then dispensed slowly down the side of the tube.
  • When the sample is full, the tube should be recapped firmly and mixed slowly by inversion. 
  • This sample is not to be sent via the Pneumatic Tube System.

Instructions for: Heidelberg Specimen Reception

  • Register sample as per normal procedures.
  • Treat sample gently and with care.
  • Once sample is registered, centrifuge and then transfer directly to a biochemistry scientist.
Laboratory Instructions

Instructions for: Heidelberg Biochemistry

  • Front load sample for performance of a haemolysis index.
  • Results will transfer to LIS automatically.
  • Consult pathologist or senior scientist if required.
